Artificial Insemination

Artificial Insemination

ABS has fine tuned Fixed Time AI in beef cattle, carrying out around 2000 AI's per year over the past
8 years with consistently good conception rates. ABS has also developed its unique Double AI Program where cows are set-up for a repeat fixed-time insemination including scanning at 28 days, the earliest date for reliable pregnancy diagnosis. Results from Double AI have been good. The majority of cows are lactating beef cows but maiden heifers are also included in the program.

AI enables breeders to use superior sires and to enable studs to link analysis of their flocks to other studs to increase the reliability of genetic evaluation.
Extensive Fixed Time AI programs are carried out
in sheep. Sheep are synchronised using intra-vaginal sponges or CIDRs before being put up for laparoscopic AI with frozen semen at a fixed time after sponge/CIDR removal.
Conception rates are approx. 67% using frozen semen.
ABS has carried out fresh semen cervical AI in dairy goat herds in the Waikato region for many years with good results. Evaluation of sires and use of selected sires is made possible.
Deer AI is carried out by non-surgical cervical AI using frozen semen at fixed time after synchronization. Good results are achieved.

ABS in a joint venture with Waratah Farms Ltd has operated a Pig AI business for the past 10 years. Waratah provide the genetics and ABS the semen production. Around 1000 doses of semen per week are distributed to piggeries throughout NZ. Breeds include:
  • Large White
  • Landrace
  • Duroc
  • Meat Packer

Approximatly 32 piggeries throughout NZ are supplied twice weekly from this facility. Excellent pregnancy rates and litter sizes are recorded as part of our ongoing monitoring program. The facility was expanded in 2011 and houses 42 boars.
